Hey Collectors, Historians, Libraries, and Museums…. If you want something that NO ONE else has, here are 2 original items of cultural and historical significance from North Korea.

Everything that comes out of North Korea can be considered propaganda--whether it be political, military, or cultural. These 2 large posters fall into the cultural category, and are undoubtedly the only original artworks that exist in the entire Western Hemisphere from the “13th April Spring Friendship Art Festival” held in Pyongyang in 1995.

The Festival is designed to promote "Independence, Peace, and Friendship" through various music, dance, acrobatic, and cultural arts performances by 400 performers from around the world who were invited for the 10-day event. The streets are utterly deserted, but 10's of thousands of people appear from the subways to fill the theaters for the daily performances. It was started in 1982 to celebrate the April 15th birthday of Kim Il Sung, who was North Korea's first leader/dictator, and was held every year until 2007 when it went to every other year, most likely because it's an absolutely massive production and is prohibitively expensive for them.

I was there for the 10-day festival in 1995 with a group of 14 Americans that included 8 jazz musicians and a 6-foot-tall blonde singer from Disney World representing the U.S. on a State Department-approved “goodwill tour.” They used our singer as the model for the poster because there is not a single woman in the entire country that looks like that!

I was "permitted" to bring these 2 posters home from the theater we performed in every day. They have never been framed and have been stored for 30 years, so they are in excellent condition except for a couple of frayed edges that you can see in picture #11 that will need to be trimmed 3/8” on each side anyway to fit perfectly into a 24" x 36" frame.

These posters are NOT on the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) list of embargoed goods.

Dimensions are 24-3/4"W x 36-1/2"H (63 x 93cm) on thick paper.
